چکیده

Lagrangian relaxation and approximate optimization algorithms have received much attention in the last two decades. Typically, the running time of these methods to obtain a ε approximate solution is proportional to 1 ε 2 . Recently, Bienstock and Iyengar, following Nesterov, gave an algorithm for fractional packing linear programs which runs in 1 ε iterations. The latter algorithm requires to solve a convex quadratic program every iteration an optimization subroutine which dominates the theoretical running time. We give an algorithm for convex programs with strictly convex constraints which runs in time proportional to 1 ε . The algorithm does not require to solve any quadratic program, but uses gradient steps and elementary operations only. Problems which have strictly convex constraints include maximum entropy frequency estimation, portfolio optimization with loss risk constraints, and various computational problems in signal processing. As a side product, we also obtain a simpler version of Bienstock and Iyengar’s result for general linear programming, with similar running time. We derive these algorithms using a new framework for deriving convex optimization algorithms from online game playing algorithms, which may be of independent interest.

Efficient algorithms for online convex optimization and their applications

In this thesis we study algorithms for online convex optimization and their relation to approximate optimization. In the first part, we propose a new algorithm for a general online optimization framework called online convex optimization. Whereas previous efficient algorithms are mostly gradient-descent based, the new algorithm is inspired by the Newton-Raphson method for convex optimization, a...

Efficient Algorithms for Online Game Playing and Universal Portfolio Management

We introduce a new algorithm and a new analysis technique that is applicable to a variety of online optimization scenarios, including regret minimization for Lipschitz regret functions, universal portfolio management, online convex optimization and online utility maximization. In addition to being more efficient and deterministic, our algorithm applies to a more general setting (e.g. when the p...

Deep Online Convex Optimization by Putting Forecaster to Sleep

Methods from convex optimization such as accelerated gradient descent are widely used as building blocks for deep learning algorithms. However, the reasons for their empirical success are unclear, since neural networks are not convex and standard guarantees do not apply. This paper develops the first rigorous link between online convex optimization and error backpropagation on convolutional net...

Online Convex Optimization

A convex repeated game is a two players game that is performed in a sequence of consecutive rounds. On round t of the repeated game, the first player chooses a vector wt from a convex set A. Next, the second player responds with a convex function gt : A → R. Finally, the first player suffers an instantaneous loss gt(wt). We study the game from the viewpoint of the first player. In offline conve...
